I don’t think it’s inevitable at all — I’ve worked with many people who performed above average and were also able to behave like normal human beings and help rather than hinder others to progress their skills and careers.

I agree about the leadership — the higher ups are typically complicit, often enabling and sometimes downright delighted with the situation, because they don’t understand the real impact it is having.
